SONIC'S BACK IN ACTION!
32-BIT POWER

Sonic Galactic is a fan-made interpretation of what a 2D-sidescrolling entry in the Sonic series could have looked like on 32-bit, 5th Generation hardware. Sporting clean, hand-pixeled backgrounds and fluid animation, the game aims for an aesthetic that pays tribute to the best of the era.

Think of the game as a "what-if" scenario: an imagining of what Sonic Team could have potentially produced on the SEGA Saturn!

While authenticity to hardware limitations is considered, Sonic Galactic draws from a number inspirations, not letting itself be limited to purely what systems of the time were capable of, nor what SEGA themselves would have necessarily done.

With new zones, new concepts, new characters, a new setting, and more, Galactic aims to put its own unique spin on the classic 2D Sonic formula, continuing both the storyline and gameplay set forth from the classic Genesis/Mega Drive games.

THE CAST OF SONIC GALACTIC

SONIC THE HEDGEHOG

The blue blur filled with attitude, Sonic's always itching to embark on a new venture! With the prolonged absence of Dr. Eggman after their last battle, he starts to gain a false sense of security during his vacation, little does he know of what was to come...

MILES "TAILS" PROWER

Sonic's closest ally and most trusted friend, this curious fox is always willing to follow alongside Sonic in his adventures! After scanning the badniks that disturbed their vacation, Tails (alongside Sonic) make haste for their source location, Dr. Eggman!

KNUCKLES THE ECHIDNA

The steadfast protector of Angel Island and the Master Emerald. Knuckles quickly caught on to Dr. Eggman's resurfacing with the badniks that attacked Angel Island. None of them coming to target the Master Emerald raised Knuckles' suspicion well enough. Understanding what this meant, Knuckles meets up with Sonic and co. to take Dr. Eggman down for good.

FANG THE SNIPER

This cunning jerboa always has a plan to make himself a bountiful profit (most of them to his detriment...). Fang didn't take too kindly to being abandoned in the Atomic Destroyer by Dr. Eggman, so he's teamed up with Sonic and co. to take him down... for purely selfish reasons and rewards, of course!

TUNNEL THE MOLE

This excitable young mole is adventurous and always up for a challenge! After noticing the abnormalities of Illusion Island caused by Dr. Eggman, Tunnel makes the decision himself to follow Sonic and co.'s trail after deciphering they're to be trusted to get to the bottom of what's going on!

THE STORY OF SONIC GALACTIC

Illusion Island, a mysterious island that is set to appear once every decade in Sonic's world. Many eons ago, it was rumored to have a meteorite of extreme power crash into the island, bringing the force of a mysterious essence.

Outside of that, its origins are a mystery, and no one is certain of its existence. Most of the island's mysteries lie down to its nature; from the different kinds of fauna never seen anywhere else, to even its surrounding water holding a different reflection of what is actually present.

Due to its mysteriously rare appearance, the island went largely undocumented, and it would remain that way for a while. It would have stayed this way, until a certain Egg-shaped menace would choose to unravel the mysteries, and disturb the peace!

After the destruction of the Death Egg in Sonic 3 & Knuckles, as well as the Atomic Destroyer in Sonic Triple Trouble, Sonic, Tails and Knuckles celebrated their victory! Seeing as there would not be much for them to do, they all went their ways for an extended break, to relax. However, Dr Eggman's schemes were far from finished.

In the desperate searches of looking for a way to restore his practically destroyed army, his energy scanner picked up a mysterious power signature never seen before, coming from a location quite far from his base. A location of mystery; where the legendary Illusion Island was said to appear once every decade. Searching through his archives and books, while lacking information, Eggman had discovered that a meteor was said to have crashed there many eons ago. Also hearing that the meteor had contained tons of energy with mysterious force, the potential of utilizing such a tool would be great.

Eggman eventually took off to check it out for himself. Looking unto the meteor and its power, it was far beyond anything he had encountered before... and just what he needed to rebuild his army. Allowing him to build things twice as fast as he could ever with normal tools, just as efficiently and strong, Eggman had realized he found himself the greatest treasure yet! By this time, Sonic was becoming increasingly suspicious of Eggman's apparent disappearance. It wasn't until rumors of Illusion Island's reappearance and strange activity reached him that he knew that eggy-fellow was up to no good!

Sonic and his crew immediately left their break to see what Eggman was truly up to. They wouldn't know it until arrival, but they would have help to this task by a character who had spent his life on the island, and felt something wasn't right with Eggman's influence taking over slowly.

Only the seven Galactic Gems scattered mysteriously across the island are capable of nullifying the Doctor's strong and seemingly unlimited power source. Sonic and co. must collect them to take a stand to Eggman's plans. Without them, Eggman's army of badniks will once again expand and threaten the entire world.

Go Sonic, Hurry! The fate of the world is depending on you!

Sonic Galactic Blog Update 1

Art by SAWhane

Though you tried your best
Responsibilities piled
As like falling snow

- A haiku, about someone

Hello there! Welcome to the first Sonic Galactic Newsfeed! We're going to try shifting our deeper progress updates on the game to this website...after all, we made it in a rush for the 2nd Demo, so we might as well use it, right?!

Besides, this will make it easier to cross post for us. It's hard to post between all our sites and share the same content, with all of them having different video limits, upload rules, and etc... so here's an easier solution to that. Who knows, as we continue to post these down the line, maybe we'll even come up with a better way to label these updates! But either way, to get into the main meat...

Happy Birthday Sonic Galactic!

Wow! It got here so soon! Has it really been 9 years?! No way, no way!

It feels like just yesterday that this game used to be just starting off in Game Maker 8, with thousands of bugs accumulating, and having older names for stages such as Disco Dance and Smoggy Swamp. Actually, that's not really true. It feels extremely ancient.

Through all the messy older builds (one that we released for you all to play on this year's April Fools) and ridiculous developments we went through up to this point, it's amazing to see that Galactic stands the way it does to this day!

For all of you who have always stuck it out for this project, whether on the team, just a bystander, or anything...we truly thank you for all the years of your support!

It's amazing to know how much this project impacts others...and we hope to continue to deliver on that front.

Now, is there anything to show in celebration for those 9 years?!?

...

...

Well, not quite. Maybe the 10th anniversary will be better. There's nothing we can show that would realistically feel fitting of the anniversary. But what we can do, at the very least, is announce something.

A Change In Release Plans

Goodbye to our promise...because we're changing things up a little. To start off, anyone aware of what has been echoed since the Mesozoic era should know that Demo 3 was stated to not be happening, and that the next time you see Galactic, it would be the finished game. That's still the case. The Demo 3 part, that is.

We've decided that it might be wise to rethink our strategy a little. Obviously, development is going at its pace for this project, which is fine, seeing as a lot of us developers are busy with many obligations. But it means that a lot of you will wait a long time before seeing Galactic again. With the huge task that is delivering the final game to you all, it wouldn't even be close to Demo 2's wait between Demo 1, which was already nearly 5 years!

So, we are deciding that we'll be doing a newer sort of release format. As soon as Umbrella Rushwinds Act 1 is a finished and playable level, we will be releasing a build that lets you play that stage. That's the name of the 4th Zone, by the way. Some of you may have even heard of it before, when playing a certain racing game. Even so, it might still leave you surprised to know that the zone's idea doesn't quite come from that game, either. We've had a long history with this stage's concept, so maybe we'll get to talk more about it another time.

But isn't that exciting?! More Galactic content!! And you won't wait 5 extra years for it!!

It's worth noting that this also won't be the only sort of "snapshot" that we end up doing. In general, you all can look forward to playing more mini teasers of Galactic, if truly desired. Waiting for the full game is fine, too!

Conclusion?

Art by TheCongressman

Well, as you can see, we're rather busy. We've had our fair share of work that we've shown you, and our fair share of things that we haven't. We still have our Blooming Ridge Zone preview to showcase to you all as promised for 25K Followers, but we've been taking time to make it feel more like the level itself is fully in motion, rather than just 20 seconds of footage. We hope you can hold out for longer!

Since we're doing things by the batch for the time being, it means that you can expect more consistent news and progress towards Galactic! Of course, this isn't easy for us to bring to life without others, and the sooner this game finishes, the better for everyone, right? So, that's a little bit of why we had opened our programmer positions up again, to get the ball rolling (once more). You can likely expect that to happen for more positions again down the road, sprite artists, animators, even musicians...

But for now, these links to the application forms will be here, in case anyone would like to hop on the wave early.
Programmers: Apply Here
Sprite Artists: Apply Here

But either way...Umbrella Rushwinds...more Galactic content, and a secret third thing...! It's happening!! Hopefully you all look forward to it!

Working around Gatekeeper

Playing Sonic Galactic on a Mac is sadly not as straightforward as we would like. While we do provide an official build of the game for Macs with Apple Silicon (and recommend WINE for those with Intel Macs), one does not simply run the .app and get on with it. The culprit of this is none other than Gatekeeper.

What is Gatekeeper?

The long and short of it is, Gatekeeper is a kind of bridge troll hired by Apple to bully developers into paying them $100/year to get their apps ‘notarised’ by the trillion-dollar company. Gatekeeper makes it so when you, the user, download an .app from the Worldwide Web, unzip it, and try to run it, you get a very dishonest error message:

Mac app damaged

Apple hopes that this fake error message will be scary enough to normal users to coerce developers into paying the fee, and if not, their hope is that the workaround will be scary enough to dissuade normal users from doing it. Sonic Galactic is a fan-made project though, and cannot afford to pay notarisation fees even if we wanted to. It truly is a shame that Apple does not want to play fair in the market by giving developers incentives to buy their notarisation services, instead relying on extorting them into it by holding their users hostage with a dishonest and manipulative user experience.

The fix

When you download Sonic Galactic for the Mac, you'll get a zipped folder. Unzip it, and you will have a file called SonicGalactic.app. Assuming it's in your Downloads folder, open up a Terminal (press Command+Spacebar and search for Terminal), and run the following command:

xattr -d com.apple.quarantine ~/Downloads/SonicGalactic.app

If it doesn't work, make sure you have the right file name in the command. There is nothing wrong with the app provided. Despite what Apple's error dialogs may say, it is not damaged. Do not throw it in the Trash.

That's it! You've done all you need to get Sonic Galactic running famously on your Mac. Thanks for playing!
